Neil Horsley, AWARE Nova Scotia
Neil is an Occupational Health and Safety professional and the current OH&S Coordinator at Aware Nova Scotia. He is a certified Health and Safety Professional and has also held roles at Nova Industrial, Speedy Glass and Kent Building Supplies.
Russell Claus, Threads of Life
Russell is a volunteer speaker with Threads of Life, the Association for Workplace Tragedy Family Support. He currently resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he works as the Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator for a federal agency. Originally from Victoria, BC, he completed his Master's degree at McMaster University where his studies and thesis focused on worker safety in the resource sector. In the summer of 2010, Russell suffered a workplace injury that changed his life forever. This led him to join the Threads of Life Speakers Bureau in 2020 to share his experience and support the mission of Threads of Life: To promote the elimination of life-altering workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths.
Stuart MacLean, CEO, Workers' Compensation Board of Nova Scotia
In his 35 years with WCB Nova Scotia, Stuart MacLean has been driven by a passion to make a difference for the workers and employers of our province. Appointed CEO in 2012, Stuart drives the WCB’s strategic vision while overseeing all aspects of its operations. He has guided the WCB through a major business transformation and toward financial sustainability. Under his watch, injury rates in the province have declined significantly, and are approaching half the number they once were. Of all he does, Stuart says nothing is more important to him than his personal commitment to making workplaces safer, preventing workplace injury, and reducing its human impact on workers and their families.
Together with partners in government and the private sector, Stuart continues the WCB’s mission to make Nova Scotia a leader in workplace safety. His safety leadership has inspired change in workplaces across the province.
Stuart has a business degree from Acadia University, an Executive MBA from Saint Mary’s University, an ICD designation from Rotman’s School of Business, and a Certified Executive Coach designation from Royal Roads University. He is an active volunteer in the community, serving as Past-Chair of the Board of Directors for the YMCA of Greater Halifax, and on the Board of Governors for Acadia University. He is the Past-Chair of the Board of the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada, and has also served on the Board of the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).
Fred Jeffers, Executive Director, Occupational Health & Safety, Department of Labour & Advanced Education
Fred Jeffers , originally from Colchester County, started his career in the mechanical field and worked in the construction industry for 18 years before moving to municipal government where he spent eight years with the Engineering Department at the Town of Bridgewater. Amidst his already busy career, he spent over 20 years as a volunteer firefighter. Fred joined the NS Office of the Fire Marshal in 2011 and spent the last 4 years as the Provincial Fire Marshal before joining the Safety Branch. He and his wife, Heather live in Bridgewater and have two adult children, Liam and Emily.
Mike MacArthur, Director, People Services, Nova Scotia Health
Mike is the Director of People Services for the Eastern Zone of Nova Scotia Health, where he oversees a team of professionals responsible for various Human Resources services for 15 hospitals and more than 5,500 employees throughout the Eastern Zone of Nova Scotia Health. He has worked with Nova Scotia Health for 15 years and has held various leadership positions in Human Resources and Occupational Health and Safety.
Shawn Budden, Ergonomist, Workers' Compensation Board of Nova Scotia
Shawn is an Ergonomist at the Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia. Shawn has worked with WCB for 2 years, and previously worked in the insurance industry. Shawn’s role at WCB focuses on providing coaching and support to help organizations develop and create sustainable systems and processes to prevent the occurrence of musculoskeletal injuries in their workplaces.
Kelly Johnston-Noseworthy, Relationship Manager, Workers' Compensation Board of Nova Scotia
Kelly is a Relationship Manager with the Workers’ Compensation Board of NS where she has worked for more than 22 years and in this role for the last 11 years. As Relationship Manager she is both a liaison and guide for large workplaces and industry sectors across Cape Breton-Unama’ki, working to improve prevention initiatives and support return to work programs. Kelly is also a founding member of the Safety First in Cape Breton Committee, where she works alongside her colleagues across the Island to make Cape Breton the safest place to do business.
Dr. Jackie Kinley, Keynote Speaker, CEO & Founder, Air Institutes
Dr. Kinley is a Psychiatrist, Associate Professor (Dalhousie University), and Honorary Fellow of the Canadian Association for Group Therapy, Training and Facilitation and a Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association. Her expertise in psychiatry and research in the neuroscience of Resilience was the inspiration behind Air-Institutes, which delivers programs to enhance mental fitness, performance and resilience.
