Addressing Impairment in the Workplace
When workers are impaired on the job, it can have serious consequences. Employers have an obligation to make sure that all workers have the ability to do their jobs safely. Being impaired at work – whether caused by alcohol, drugs, or another source – can affect our ability to focus, make decisions, follow instructions or handle equipment and tools. During this interactive session, attendees will venture outside to the Nova Scotia Power Slip Simulator where they will walk across a simulated ice surface facing various obstacles. Attendees will be wearing reverse ice cleats and tied to a fall protection harness system in the ceiling and the instructor will educate on proper walking techniques throughout the session. Attendees are asked to not wear high heel shoes for this exercise and should be able to put on a proper fall protection harness. In this interactive session, attendees will experience Bolland Driving Solutions’ virtual reality simulator, One Simple Decision, the world’s first simulation-based impaired and distracted driving program designed to stop destructive driving behaviors. This simulator will offer drivers a personal experience illustrated through simulation, high definition consequence videos from medical personal and RCMP, interactive quizzes, and “Reality Check”. NFLD and Toronto Police departments, Nova Scotia Power, and others, such as the US Military, have used this system as a safety educational tool. This session is limited to 4 participants only. The purpose of the Workplace Violence Prevention Program is to provide an opportunity for Employers to assess Safety Culture within their respective organization regarding workplace violence through the application of the Employee Perception Survey, Program Review and risk assessment. These tools will serve to evaluate their organization’s compliance with the Nova Scotia Workplace Violence Regulations and consider some optional best practice program elements such as bullying and domestic violence to enhance the workplace violence prevention program. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has developed a program “Total Worker Health” to help organizations review their policies, programs, and practices that integrate protection from work-related safety and health hazards with promotion of injury and illness prevention efforts to advance worker well-being. The session will look at the state of health in the Nova Scotia population and identify a tool to assist in setting the priorities for health initiatives in your workplace. Burnout is often recognized as emotional exhaustion, ineffectiveness in the workplace, and negative responses to stressful conditions. Left unaddressed, workplace stress and burnout can result in poor physical health, greater risk of workplace accidents, the development of mental health issues, and even increased absenteeism, presenteeism and turnover. This session’s focus is to define the issue, recognize signs and symptoms and identify preventative steps for reducing the impact of burnout on employees and workplaces. Mental health in the workplace
It can be challenging to create and successfully maintain healthy workplaces that address both the psychological and physical well-being of your employees equitably. This session, Mental Health in the Workplace, invites participants to look at how work environments help people access personal health resources, address workplace psychosocial factors, protect people in their physical work environment and provide community involvement opportunities.
